He started playing drums at the age of 6, and later moved on to keyboard instruments.〔(Interview Score Magazine ) Retrieved April 8, 2015〕 As a solo-entertainer at a party, Schimmer came in contact with Hans van Eijck. At the time Van Eijck was responsible some TV themes on Dutch television. He asked Schimmer to come work for him. Schimmer’s first job was to write a song for a TV charity event. The song was performed some months later by Dutch artists Anita Meyer and Gordon. His first TV theme was for the television show Peter R. de Vries, crime reporter.
